Anyone using Line 6 Helix Floor Effects unit?
« on: Feb 09, 2020, 04:01:47 PM »
I've been looking at this as an alternative to a board of old fashioned pedals. I've heard the difference it made to a guitarist's sound - just wondered if anyone here has tried one out with a violin?
Can you plug a piezo straight into it?
Any problems with it?
The only problem I've seen is the lights can be hard to see on a bright stage but that's true for a lot of effects.

"Can you plug a piezo straight into it?"
You can, but it will degrade the sound. Only plug piezos into "acoustic" preamps or amps designed to amplify acoustic instruments

Tons of players are using these live.

And I plug straight into it.  Actually, I use a wireless.  Sounds fantastic.  I have a Barbera pickup and I have never toured with a preamp.

You can do ANYTHING with it.  You are pretty much only limited by your imagination and programming ability.

Jesus Florido, Rachel Grace, Chuck Bontrager, Ernesto Lago, Razz, Tina Guo, etc.  They're all using the Helix.

I have two.  I use the Helix Floor for ground based gigs (bus, truck, etc.)  I use the HX Stomp for fly dates.

I have a bunch of different sounds.  But my main tone for a lot of my jobs is a simple "acoustic" violin tone.  I use a touch of EQ, an impulse response, and a little verb.  I get tons of compliments from sound engineers (and other folks, but who cares about them when the sound guy is happy?).

For my original trio, it's mostly heavy distortion, and it sounds like Satan himself is trying to claw his way out of the speakers.  It's just the sound I'm going for.
