What are some Sad Fiddle recordings?
« on: Dec 21, 2019, 11:09:45 PM »
I'm not looking for sad lyrics, although that's OK. And I'm not looking for any specific genre, I'm looking for any fiddle recordings with sad melodies, possibly minor keys.

I've been listening to songs like Tennessee Pusher by OCMS, You'll Never Leave Harlin Alive, the stuff on the Cold Mountain soundtrack, and many of Red Tail Ring's songs. If you take the lyrics away, I'd even say Amazing Grace has a kind of sad melody.

Look up Ralph Stanley, or Stanley Brothers. Lots of sorrowful tunes.

Most of the ones I do are pretty sad...

At least that's what the people who hear them say!

Not fiddle centric but worth going down the rabbit holes, that is the Blues. I've often thought many a Bluesman wished they had the sustain and pitch bending a fiddle affords. From Lightn'n Hopkins, and Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters. Eventually Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eric Clapton. Sometimes i think, these guys are working way too hard. 😀 .

Hi Shaunfiddler,
Have you tried: DA DAY DAWN, a Shetland fiddle tune?
It's also very apt, as it's a Christmas morning type tune.
You can almost feel the cold creeping in !
All the best for 2020.

Do you know Neil Gow's Lament for his 2nd wife? His first wife died, he remarried, then his 2nd wife died. He was so sad he didn't even pick up his fiddle for like 2 years? and finally he picked it up and this tune came out. Buddy McMaster has a pretty good recording of it, try Youtube
