Does amount of hair affect tone much?
« on: Mar 01, 2014, 03:49:05 PM »
My fiddler friend tried a bow out at the used instrument shop that made my fiddle sound noticeably better. But--it only had about half it’s hair. Would giving it full hair change its tonal qualities or just its volume? Another way to ask—if I bought it and had it re-haired would it still sound about the same?

thanks!

Not necessarily the amount, but the quality makes a great deal of difference.

That said, it was probably just a much better bow. The quality of the bow makes a world of difference with the sound, which is why a Pecatte bow is $70,000.00+ and a Sartory bow is $40,000.00+ starting prices.

ZOINKS! not ready for THAT yet. Thanks Joe!

How do I know what quality hair I want/am getting? Is there a thread here that'll enlighten me?

White Mongolian unbleached hair, and from a male horse. Yes, they separate it that way. The male is better than the female.

However, that is the most expensive hair.

I think the amount of hair can make a huge difference.

You can request, with in reason, if you prefer it thicker or thinner when you get it haired.

Amount of hair is linked to how stiff the bow is. But there it always room for above and below the norm.
