case cover?
« on: Sep 12, 2011, 11:18:44 PM »
Hi everyone

I am hoping someone might be able to help me wiuth my oblong violin case

I've had it about 25 years  :o

it seems to be a "no name" case as far as I can see and I honestly can't remember much about buying it.

the problem I have is that the zip has broken on it and therefore I'm always a bit bothered about just keep it shut with the one slide style latch and velcro flaps.

In addiiton, it collects dust like its going out of fashion and it seems to embe ditself in the material and cannot be totally cleaned!

I know rthat certain manufacturers supply replacement covers for there cases, but what's the chances of me getting one that fits for this? I did a brief google but didn;t really turn anything up.

I'm loathe to get rid of the case, when its only the cover that has issues and it does appear replaceable.

any ideas?

thanks
chris

Have you considered just wrapping it with 2 buckling straps?  They're cheap, and it would work well enough.

There is a type of cover you can buy - I think it's called Cushy, or something like that - that goes over your existing case, and it has a zipper.

It always amuses me when cases like this are sold and described as having 'replaceable covers' !
Try finding one!

I'm sure the 'big-name' uber-expensive case manufacturers can come up with the goods (at a price!) but it seems a shame to always have to contemplate binning a perfectly good case when the zips/catches/hinges go?

As suggested - a couple of trouser belts would do for me....... ;)
If your sewing skills where up to snuff you might replace the zip?-Bit tedious 'though. Or some 'snap' buttons (poppers) in addition to the velcro would give added security perhaps?

Good Luck

W

Why not take it to an alterations shop and have them install a new zipper?

Is it the inside or the outside that is dirty?

Any good seamstress can replace the zipper for a few bucks, which is what I would do - why throw out a perfectly good case because of a broken zip? If the case is off for repair, it could be washed as well...Where are you located?

If not a seamstress, a luggage repair shop can also do the repairs.

Looks like an American Case - try asking Shar.  Bobelock does covers for theirs, maybe the same size.  Distributed by Howard Core

thansk for all the thoughts

never thought about a luggage repair place
I guess I need to take a closer look and see what could be done

its a pretyy tight fit round the case so I figured it would not be easy - there are screws keeping the whole thing in place

what do you all clean your cases with then? its my cover that's pretty dirty, inside etc. is fine.
