Batteries and chargers?
« on: Feb 13, 2011, 03:06:51 PM »
I've had a universal Ni-Cd battery charger for many years now. I recently bought another batch of batteries to replace the ones that got lost or just ran out of steam. A friend pointed out to me that the new batteries were Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and told me I shouldn't be putting them in the old charger 'cos it's dangerous. All I know is, I put 'em in flat and they come out charged :-\

Anyone have any wisdom/technical knowlege to share on this? Do I really need to go and buy another charger?

Hi Martyn, in short, NiMH batteries are a different technology and need a different charger than that for NiCad's.
Not seen the ill effects but is seriously not recommended.

Charge rate and end point detection is different for the two battery types. Most likely to undercharge the batteries. Older overnight chargers are likely to take 48 hrs to charge the higher capacity NiMH batteries. Leave on for too long and you damage it. The timed Nicad chargers will just stop short of max charge, so no benefit from the extra capacity you have bought. Nicad rapid chargers are likely to overcharge the NiMH ones and damage them.

Smart chargers are recommended for NiMH batteries to get the most from them.
