Tune: Speed the Knitting
« on: Nov 22, 2010, 03:53:26 PM »
Here's a little tune I wrote (hopefully not channeling any other tune - I've listened to it back so many times I can't tell).

X:2
T:Speed t' Knitting
C:LDT
N:Inspired by a challenge set by TSMB
N:Composed on C/G Tedrow Anglo Concertina
N:Thanks to Steve for transcription of my playing
M:6/8
K:G
P:A
HD [| "G"G2A BGB | "D"B2A B2 c | "C"c2B "G"ABA | G2 F G2 E |
G2A BGB | B2A B2 c | "C"c2B ABA | "G"G2 F "D"D3 :|]
P:B
"G"G2A B2A | G2B "C"GFE | "G"G2A B2A | "D"G2B "C"FED |
"G"G2A B2A | G2B "C"GAB | "G"G2A B2A | "G"G2B "D"HD3 :|]

comments welcome

p.s. I have no idea with the chords....they are just a guess-timate.

Quite a nice tune , but it kind of feels like the 2 parts (or at least the B part) ought to end on a G?
We'll have to think of the rest of the set to go with it..The Little Ball of Yarn?
Silver Threads & Golden Needles?
Now ear this!

Thanks. :)
Maybe I should compose its companion.
'drop a stitch' or 'knit on perl one'.

Is nice circular tune. Maybe it wants to be followed by "Binding Off" in either G for every day, or in D for a decorative edge. You want to get really fancy, keep the C naturals and Bind Off in D mixyloopian.
I want to be a musician when I grow up.
Sorry, son, you can't do both.

Maybe it all to be a set...casting on, speed the knitting, casting off.

This is the original recording it was transcribed from

Ok, got it through the tune-o-tron and it looks good - I agree with Nick - it "looks" like it should end on G but I'm sticking with D since that's how you wrote it - am at work now so will have to wait to listen and play it.  Band practice tonight, if I get it under my belt I'll bring it along and see about playing it with others......  will let you know!!!!

Ok, played it through a few times - very nice, lots of opportunities for variations - hard to keep to the given path :)  So, yeah, going back to the D on the end of the phrases does make for the nice circular nature as Bees noticed but I do definitely have a hankering to end it whole business on G (when forced to stop that is).

Good one, will try it with a mandoliner tonight I suspect.

Your welcome to exchange the D for a G last time round. Not sure how I would write that in ABC though?

Ok, LadyD, here's a quick version on the old mandolin, I think there might be a variation or two!   ;)   It's quite fun to play, I think I will try to get my band to play it!

As long as you credit the tune to me, and send me a link, that's fine.

LDT, I hope you don't mind, but seeing as you wrote the chords were guesstimates I took the liberty to change them a bit into my guessings. I used ABC-explorer to change the chord names in the " " and then play  back as a midi to hear if it sounded ok. I like these chords with it more then the ones in the original transcription. I'll now have another go at playing it on the fiddle after hearing it midified over and over again I don't think I'll still have the urge to land on a G at the end :)

Cool. Glad you feel like you want to play it after listening to it ad nauseum. :)

Thanks for doing that. Knowing what chords to play when is not my strong point.
I've even given you a credit. ;)

Cool chords, Zai, although I still seem to go back to the G, go figure!  Hope you didn't mind the turkeys, LadyD, I videoed them at my parent's house last week and thought they went well with my short sound clip - and since it's Thanksgiving and all here in the old USA......

The more I play this tune the more I like it. Glad you like what I did with it chord-wise, and really cool I made it to your blog ;D

When working on the chords I used this handy gadget to help me set up my palette. Seeing as your tune ends on a D and has one sharp I set it to Dmix.

So here's that recording I did of it. Just solo fiddle, no chords but there are a couple of variations that came to mind while playing it over and over and over and which I liked, so I kept those. Hope you like my take on it.

It's great. I like the extra twiddles in there. Gives it a nice 'lift'.
Do you mind if I add some melodeon to the track?
