GC's website
« on: Mar 27, 2010, 08:18:25 PM »
I've been messing with my site - I want a simple no frills, yet interesting set of pages.

Please tell me if there is anything I ought to add that you would be interested in.

Here it is:-

Bit of a problem with fonts or line spacing.
1st page, the lines are to close so that they are touching each other.
News, Font much too small.
Recording, Good.
Teaching, too small.
Repertoire, Too small.
Reviews, Good!!
Links, too small (although doesn't matter so much)
Contact, font size ok, but should have your email address as well as the contact form. Also should have a phone number?

My only other point is that while it is informative and honest, if you weren't a musician and lets say you sold cars for a living and you relied on this site for business; I think you may have gone bust by now!
But then you have integrity and I got involved with the devil on some deal with a fiddle made of gold! ;)

Thank you, Pete - font size and spacing is something I couldn't have seen for myself. Odd though, looks ok in my wysiwyg editor

Will see what I can do about that.

Re contact form, the whole point is to avoid crawlers getting yr email addy for spam.
So. no I won't be putting up my address or phone number - tis easy enough to use the form

I see the point of simple and no frills - but I think you could designvise think about the fact that most users have widescreens. You could have a design where you do not have to scroll like I do on my macbook 13"..

News -gallery -CDs -links and contact are different layouts than some of the other pages
Some of the menus items are not showing when you click teaching is that on purpose?

No, just work in progress.

Thank you - I will do what I can about the width - or maybe just not have long pages.

Yes, a "Fiddle Hell" page would be a great idea. With photos!

That's a good idea for a site. Simple, straightforward, no messing.

Here are my observations / suggestions : get your  best audio / videos (at least one of them) right on the home page. People see the face, see the the violin, read "jazz violinist" and want to hear your stuff now! Link-clicking comes later.  First impressions are best, and lasting!

Remove any non-working links. People get p***d off when they click on a link, only to be told "not ready yet", then have to click to go back to where they were originally. Unnecessary distraction. If something is coming soon, just say so - don't mislead with a link :)

Regarding font size, not a problem on my screen, but the size needs to be consistent. Remember, some people right-click a link to open a new window, and view two pages at once, so it's important for font size to be the same.

Main page : the photo is cropped at the top, or at least appears to be - it will tempt people to scroll up (when of course you can't). Maybe get the photo in with a little margin at the top?

All in all, a good site with very good content too :)

Jim

Thank You Jim.

You have suggested some things that I don't yet know how to do (adding media) , but fixing empty links I can get done tonight - even if I just add somne content.

I have been going through getting font size consistent - but will keep that a priority for new content.

ta!

I suppose the question I am asking is what do you want the site for?

If the answer is "you want people who are interested in finding out stuff about you/your thoughts/your career etc to get that information" then great it does that.

If the site is to get you work/make you money, then you should have your email address and phone number on it.

If I didn't know you but had been recommended you, and needed to find a fiddler for a well paid gig, I would search google find your site, but when I saw no phone number I would go and search for someone else.
In the real world I get a call for a gig, I'm not available, I'm trying to find someone else within the hour, not fill in some form that the fiddler might not check for a couple of days.

Just my opinion M'Lud...

Pete, I know what you mean, but I used to get so much spam from the type of crawling, that I don't want it again. When the only emails you get from the site are sus, you might as well put a form on there

Phone number is a great idea. I will put it on every page. Crawlers can't spam that. Yet.

If you have your email address as a graphic, as on this forum with mine (check the left side) then that can't be used by spam.

Also, top tips for reducing spam - as you can imagine, I should get loads of it because of the forum.

1) Make sure your server provider is running spamassasin

2) Forward mail from your server to a googlemail account. The spam blocking in googlemail is really rather good. I maybe get 2 or 3 a day which get through the hoops, out of what looks like 1000+

One other thing : your "When to Play" link works OK, but the URL  =

http://www.grahamviolin.com/When%20to%20Play.html

... it contains spaces (%20), which can mess up in older browsers and in file transfer software when trying to download. I know this isn't a download, but it's recommended you use dashes or underscores instead, in all of your links, to avoid any problems.
