Andreas Paganini rosin...UK suppliers?
« on: Apr 12, 2009, 01:06:30 AM »
Realising my cake won't last for ever  :'(...where can I get Andreas Paganini the UK?
I can get it from Hong Kong (which is where the original cake was shipped from), but can't source anywhere more local on the internet....anyone?  :)

I had a long trawl through rosin suppliers a couple of months ago but I couldn't find anyone who supplies Paganini rosin in the UK. I ended up switching to a different brand. I think you may be out of luck.

They used to sell on e-bay too...but direct sales only now I think.

Odd that Andreas don't have a UK supply network  ::)

Is this company just pulling a series of marketing stunts by continually hyping a product then taking it off the market, only for a newer, more expensive version to emerge shortly after? I remember a few years ago that Heinz announced that they were going to stop making their salad cream. Result? Record sales in the months that followed, and it's still sold today.
May be I'm just too cynical, but I can't see why any rosin should be this expensive. I see more playing difference between different amounts of rosin on the bow than I do between different brands, although admittedly I haven't tried many. One block lasts me forever.

Chris, just came across this http://www.ardistribution.co.uk/pages/andreas.html which suggests it will be available from uk again in the summer. They also sell Melos rosin which is very highly rated by some people I think.

By coincidence, I just ordered some Andrea Paganini Solo rosin from prodigyinstruments.com last night.  $19.45 with free shipping to US.  Shipping anywhere in the world for flat $13.00 rate. No financial interest.

Thanks Dave and Martin! A part of me is embarrassed that I have to have something so hard to get hold of here...especially as I'm no great shakes to begin with  ;(.
If they are anything like the Pag...I'd like to try some David and Casals too...seems a good reference rosin.
Martin, thanks for the link...I'll try the UK dealer list tomorrow.
Know what you mean about rosin lasting forever....but the Andreas Paganini clearly doesn't...seems a softer compound than most.
As far as cynicism.....have you read the Andreas origins story on their website?.....makes a lot of kids stories seem like in depth news reports in comparison!  ;D
I'll have to give the Melos a go some time....just worried that it may be another to add to the pile for melting down into rosin bullion ingots ;D

I just got some Paganini from Johnson Strings to replace my 4(?)-year-old cake of Tartini Silkier Soloist and I love it!  I think the old cake was starting to go; I'd noticed that the powder was starting to cake up a bit more than in the past (but the cake also had fractured from dropping it a couple times so it was due for replacement at any rate).  The new rosin seems to have a touch more bite while still being extremely smooth--suits my style which is classically-influenced Northeast-style Scottish.  I don't believe any of the hype around Tartini/Andrea rosin but it's still an extremely good product in my opinion.  Expensive but worth it to me.

Hi

Sorry I'm a bit behind in adding to this thread. I wanted to try and clear up any confusion without people thinking I was trying to sell something! Andrea rosin has been through a few changes over the years. Firstly being called Tartini, then changing it's name to Andrea (after the maker) when the distributing company in South Korea changed to Cremona in Seoul. Then it moved to another company (Cremona in Tokyo) and the rosin changed to a smaller size. I didn't stock any of the rosin produced by Cremona in Tokyo. Now the company is in the hands of Peter who is the maker's son and a good violinist - the company is Cremona in America and I have been assured it won't be changing again.

Confusing I know, but things are now going to settle down. If this stuff hadn't been seriously good I wouldn't have carried on chasing it around the world! It's been hair tearingly frustrating at times.

Hi,

On the Andreas page a video is referencAd being removed by the user. Maybe you should remove the link or replace it by a different one.

More or less On topic:
I searched in germany for a long time (some tartini were available but seldom found) and only ebay revealed it (too expense for me when just ordering rosin).
When I ordered an incredibow I als ordered the rosin there. After playing more than one year I'm still very content with it though compared to Melos I need to rerosin much more often. I like the sound on my acoustic viola.

Regards

Hi

Many thanks for that. I have tracked down the new link and uploaded it again on the Andrea page.

Thank you also for the feedback on the rosin. I'd be curious to know which incarnation of the Andrea you are using. Feel free to PM as I don't want to hijack this thread.
