I need help finding a new tune!
« on: Dec 28, 2008, 08:18:11 AM »
Alright. So, the fevers got me and I'm itching to learn a new tune.
Problem is, I've learned all the ones I made goals of up till now and can't think of any more.  (is this what they call a plateau? o.O)
I want to learn something sad and mournful, maybe a dirge or a haunting Irish tune. Anyone who can suggest me a song or two?  I can read most forms of fiddle notation/tab and have ABC,finale, and midi notation software and if all else fails I have ears, so, if you know a sad song you'd like to share with a stranger, I'd be glad for suggestions.   :D

Peace and thank you! <3

Don't forget the english repertoire; Vaughan Williams' 'Folk Song Suite' has some fine tunes.  There are many others.

I was going through the same thing. I heard Manus McGuire playing "Miss Graham of Inchbrakie" and decided to learn it. You'll find it here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/MISSG_MISSJO.htm#MISS_GRAHAM_OF_INCHBRAKIE

If you put it through Concertina convert-a-matic delete the space between the lines and it'll work. The midi will play it far too fast. Play it real slow and with feeling.  Listen to it here http://www.manusmcguire.com/ problem is he plays the tune in another key. But you'll get the idea.

How about a lovet Irish set dance like "Down the Hill"?

The link will only let you download the mp3, not stream it.  Bandwidth consideration.

If you like it I'm sure I have the ABC's at home and could post them later today.

Anjelkat, you asked for Irish tunes, I'm Welsh, but am going to recommend a Scottish tune - Neil Gow's lament for his second wife. It's a lovely wistful sort of tune without being overly sentimental, in my opinion. Apologies if you already know it.
Listen to Buddy Macmasters play it beautifully here-first tune of the set-  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ny2beJky_KM
The notes are here http://www.standrewsri.org/transcriptions/neilgowslament.html

Hi, thanks, but the Mp3 is unrecognizeable by windows media and Audacity. How did you encode it?

Nothing special about the mp3.  It  works fine on two different pc's for me. Both with audacity and media player.

If nothing else, go to the school website at http://www.rileyirishmusic.com/
find go to music and the school tunes on the left menu. Look in the 2007 archive for tune number 5 "Down the Hill"

Attached if it works is a pdf of the dots - this is basically the James Kelly setting.

Ken

ps. take this one rather slow and deliberate. I play it at about ♪=120

The other thing to remember is that the mood of the music can be set by the playing.  Think of 'Gentle Maiden' and 'Rosin the Bow'.  The same notes, change the time signature to 6/8 from 3/4 and get a totally different mood, though neither is particularly mournful.  It's just an example.  :)

I just love these penguins.   ;( :laugh: :-* :-\ :-X :P ::) ??? 8) :o :( >:( ;D :D ;)

That's very true as well, but I was looking for something composed in order to sound mournful. I've tried slowing down most of the tunes I know but they just don't get -sad- enough, you know? Well, save for maybe Sailor Saturns Theme from sailor moon (yes I'm that big of a nerd)

Oh my! your penguins have become snowflakes!

that's so weird, my machine must be a little touched about the noggin.
I got the tune to play from the school website, but not the dots :/ that's a beautiful tune though.

Ken, that's a lovely tune, playing along the recording off the dots I found there's a bit missing in the sheetmusic. Missing bar in the 3rd bit?

Neill Gow's Lament for his Second Wife.

Da Slockit Light

Bovaglie's Plaid

Even with those, it's not so much the notes, but how you play them.  Phrasing and dynamics are critical.
