Hometown and online Supply companies
« on: Jan 30, 2004, 03:15:31 AM »
I am hopeing to compile a list of companies that we have done - or are doing business with world wide.  If you list a company as a bad supplier, please (do not) rip and tear, just state the plain facts and believe us when we say we understand good from bad.

Lets try and keep it to a list of companies that we should be doing business with.  This could really save us all some money over the years.

I'll start with Southwest Strings of Tucson, Az.
(800) 528-3430 toll free
(800) 528-3470 fax line
e-mail: sws@swstrings.com
web: www.swstrings.com

They will provide a catalog of their complete line free of charge.

And with this free ad, I think they should be a forum commerical sponsors.

Over the years I have dealt with many companies but two stand out for their customer service. I like to use toll free numbers to place orders so I can discuss any questions I have.
For just about anything string related:

More of a Folk music place:

I've found Karin Menzel, a violin dealer and luthier in Boonton, NJ, to be knowledgeable and fair-minded.  I bought my current fiddle (with case) from her a year ago and was very pleased with the deal I got on it.  She's not only trained as a luthier but is also a classical violinist and gives lessons as well (although I don't think she's presently taking any more new students):

Karin Menzel Violins
103 Cornelia Street
Boonton, NJ 07005
(973) 334-2552

She doesn't seem to have a website.

I already posted this on a similar thread in the Sauna (confusing!) but anyway:

http://www.westcountryviolins.com

Highly recommended. They have nice photos, good descriptions and sound files of the instruments they sell (which are cheaper than lots of other places). Fast shipping and very well packed, too (my violin arrived the next working day, and only the E string was slightly out of tune!). :)

I've personally had good experience ordering accessories from all the following:

www.concordmusic.com
www.woodwindbrasswind.com
www.elderly.com
www.quinnviolins.com
www.swstrings.com
www.internationalviolin.com

One that apparently quite a few people have had issues with is www.musiccitystrings.com.  (I have no experience of them myself.)

There are not many in this neck of the woods but, I have found Cardiff Violins very helpful. Also in Cardiff, San Domenico is out of my league but, has been very pleasant on my get-out-of-the-rain visits.

When I started, Liz at Elida was a great help.

I'm afraid that I found Woodwind Brasswind off hand when I queried a shipping cost of $35 for a Bowright to the UK.

I must admit that most people I have contacted have been helpful.

Hereís two from Sydney, Australia, to help in the request for a world-wide listing.

I happily recommend the Sydney String Centre, run by David Glanville (maker, repairer) and his wife (classical performer and teacher). Davidís done some truly impressive repair/restoration work for me at extremely reasonable cost and Iíve heard nothing but praise from anyone else whoís done business with the SSC. He has an excellent balance between doing the job properly and not spending your money unnecessarily.

The SSC website is http://www.violins.com.au/index.htm

I also thoroughly recommend Jim Ellender of:

Ellender Musical Services
31 Hennessy St Croydon 2132
(02) 9797 0768 OR (02) 9798 0132

(No web site, unfortunately.) Jim Ellender specialises in bow making and repairs but also supplies well-set up, good quality, value-for-money student instruments, second-hand instruments, general supplies, etc.

Name me a country that does not have any fiddles and that would be the country we don't need a listing from.

Goodness Pilgrum, Kevin and Jeff would be sad to know you haven't mentioned the Santa Fe Violin Shop.  I do all my business with them they are so helpful and generous I feel guilty if I buy something fiddle related anywhere else truly they are great guys with knowledge abounding.

As for the internet shops the only ones i have delt with are 1Reason.com sent me my electric I could complain but its a waste of time they were out of the one I had ordered and failed to tell me that had to contact them to find out what had happenned they did make it good though eventually.

www.wwbw.com or Woodwind and Brasswind I have delt with for a flugelhorn and a flugelhorn mouthpeice both items are as described (ok I really really like both) and shipping was fast they run a good shop and keep a real one in addition to their online stuff.  I am not however overly impressed with their violin offering but then I haven't played any if they give their 45 day return policy with their violins like they do their horns it may be worth a shot they did seem knowledgable on the phone and the "pro" horn they sold me is indeed a "pro" horn.  So they should at least be safe for strings, rosin, and general music supplies.

stringnet.com delivered a violin advertised as restored, but it wasn't.  After much push, it was "fixed" for me.  Included putting a viola peg in the oversize A peg hole.  Pathetic.

This list is getting better everyday.

I will now ask the luthiers, shop owners, please if you name or shop is not properly listed here then do list it.  If you'r one of us then fair is fair, list it in big bold letters.

Reeltime Traveller's -- Heide Andrade on fiddle.  It's a wonderfully crooked version.  And Earl White showed me the version that the folks were playing in North Carolina and Virginia 10 years ago or so.

I have ordered from the following and had good results:

Dov Schmidt - all kinds of fittings, etc.
    Web Site
    Phone 866-368-7347  [866-DOV-PEGS]
    Email:  info@dov-music.com
    near Philadelphia

Stewart McDonald - tools supplies for wood/string instr's
    Web Site
    Phone 800-848-2273
Email via this form on their website
    Athens, OH

International Luthiers - good prices on certain tools & supplies
    Web Site
    Phone 918-835-4181
    Email:   orders@internationalluthiers.com
               contact@internationalluthiers.com for inquiries
    Tulsa, OK

John Chen Music - parts, has a nice $11 tailpiece w/FT's
    Web Site
    Phone 626-309-2908
    Email:  sales@jcmusic.com
    Los Angeles, CA

Luscombe Violins - has some things I can't find elsewhere
    Web Site
Couldn't find a phone on their web site though I know it's in there somewhere
    Email:  violins@violins.on.ca
    Elgin, ONT, Canada

"bezdez" - eBay merchant with lots of parts etc
    Current list of eBay auctions
Never talked to them on the phone
    EMail:  bezdez@vianet.ca
    based somewhere in Canada
  • bezdez have taken orders from me via email but I think they want to be careful about cutting out eBay.  Sometimes I've waited to win an auction first and then sent them my whole list if I need a few things.
Locally I've dealt with Peter Seman Violins in Skokie, IL.  Nice people, good work.
    Web Site
    Phone:  847-674-0690
    Email:  info@semanviolins.com
    Skokie, IL

I've also purchased from several others already listed, all with good results:
  • Johnson
  • Shar
  • Southwest Strings
  • Quinn Violins
And I haven't been burned too bad on anything except for a couple of fiddles on eBay that were less than what I hoped for.  But eBay is totally caveat emptor anyway.

In Houston, I have done a little business with Lisle Violin, and had a bow rehaired by H&H and Gold Violin.  Several years ago I bought my first violin at Gold, and used him to consign a couple of fiddles, but have been over there just once since moving away and back -- too far to drive, really, so my experience is not recent.  No complaints with any of them, though.

Here's my online list - I think it covers all of them.  These places I've done business with in the past year or two, plus a list of what I remember buying from them as long as I've used them:

Shar - been using them for about 10 years (strings, music, accessories)
Southwest Strings - ditto on time (cases, bows, strings, music, accessories)
Johnson String Instrument (violin, case, accessories)
Loxahatchee Valley Strings (bows)
Music123.com (recording stuff only)

Places I've used in the past, but not recently, but seem to still have an Ok reputation based on other feedback, so I'll add some corroboration:
International Violin (case, bridges, pegs, etc.)
Concord Music (Dr. Beat metronome, strings)

Brook Mays music stores
Dallas, Texas
Has an assortment of string instuments (very few fiddles) along with everything else musical. Comparitively overpriced, very few  knowledgeable sales people (but they try). Teaching studios, but not advanced.
The artist, Gary H.

This is an excellent thread!
I bought a Cadenza Artist bow from Steve at Giannaviolins- great experience.
I bought some rosin from Adam at Pioneer Valley - also a great experience.
same with Dov Schmidt - I love his fittings, especially the Strad chinrest (very comfortable for me)
I've bought strings at www.usaviolin.com, with good results, though their prices seem to have risen lately.
Locally, Lasley & Russ Violins in Seattle...Duane Lasley is an excellent luthier and maker, and has done all of the work on my instruments, and has made very good recommendations  regarding different things to try to fine-tune my fiddles...strings, tailpieces, etc. My favorite pernambuco bow came from him as well.

Is this Duane Lasley the fellow that's associated with Dusty Strings in Fremont? I've talked to him briefly there, but wasn't sure if he's also a bowmaker. I recall one of the Dusty Strings fiddler/salespersons (a while ago) mentioning she or someone she knew bought a wonderful bow from him or someone with a similar name ... can't recall.

I'll also second a nod to Steve Perry's wonderful service, skills, and instruments. Locally, Jeff Loen at Kenmore Violins is a wonderful and friendly resource who's a wealth of information and is generous with advice and has quite reasonable rates. We had a nice conversation the other day about Deena Spear and her book.

Also, Bentley Stringed Instruments in Everett is a great place -- also good rates and very friendly. I'm not sure what is is about the violin guys, but they are the most helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable music-related business people I've ever run across.
