Absolute favourite? Well, my own metal covers, of course!  :P j/k(or not)

Kogan's rendition of Waxman is plain badass, even despite the horrible sound quality.

Mark O'Connor's been teaching Yo-yo Ma to fiddle Texas style, and Ma seems to be liking it a lot...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-bok3otfMs#ws
Ma's changed his grip on the bow more along the lines of what Mark does. Says it works better on Bach too - gives "a tremendous variety of inflection without losing rhythmic clarity." You know you've arrived when you can teach Yo-yo Ma.

Or it just may indicate the superiority of the TUF grip, which shows up especially in fast playing that requires rhythmic clarity.
I basically noticed the same thing after switched to Thumb Under Frog and getting used to it-
definitely clearer, definitely more rhythmic precision.
Every time I try to go back to a conventional thumb on stick grip, it feels SO ponderous and mushy...
like driving an old Buick with a soft mushy suspension and sloppy steering.  And I don't think it's because I'm not used to it, I think it's an inherent weakness in the conventional grip.
I think people learn to compensate for that weakness, but it's nicer NOT to have to compensate for it, and put your energy into just playing music.

I do admit to being surprised, though, that TUF even works for cello!!!

Each to his /her own, whatever works, etc . I use the conventional TOS hold - have done for years. The TUF feels awkward and insecure to me ... the only thing that I think is of any physical importance is that the TOS is more secure than the TUF, and this would be important when tilting the bow in and out quickly.

excuse me but.... what's da name a dat tune? Is it a traditional tune? Really almost sure it's in that movie *Last of the Mohicans* reason I ask is I thought the main theme for the movie was so nice I decided to learn it. The basic theme is fairly simple. And I guess this tune would be fairly simple for all yous fiddle players. But in the movie it was done a bit faster than this and a bit more complicated and I really liked it. I thought the person who did the music for the movie just composed this along with all the other variations to the main theme cuz it's kinda similar. Anyways, really like this little tune. What is it? Scottish? Irish? I'm thinking more Scottish-ish...but what do I know ;D If I would or could do fiddle tunes, this is the style I'd be drawn to.

hold the phone! I only listened to the first half of the vid before I made the post. So I get back to the computer (fiddle in hand) thinkin' *I'm gonna learn this thing* but this time I'm thinking I should listen to the vid all the way thru. To my utter amazement and delight, she goes into the main theme of Yes Last of the Mohicans for the second half of the vid.

I'm hooked now- forget the diminished scales for the time being- I'm gonna learn this if it kills me.

If any one could turn me on to an additional link (is showing a close up of a finger board asking too much :D) would be very much appreciated!

Here's a short and sweet introduction to Moldavan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.  First she plays with her mother and father from an album of her native land, then she plays a medley of virtuoistic stuff with Fazel Say.

Mina,

If you do a viola part I'll do a low whistle one ;-)

It's just begging for rolls...

(Not sure about the second part, need another listen/watch I guess.)

BV  it's called The Gael.  We play it, a lot faster, in part of our Songs You KNow from the Movies set.  Fun tune that lends to a lot of improv....

The Gael...thanks Cap! There's a scene in the movie where they're having a little party in the fort and a fiddler is playing the * fiddle portion* of the main theme. If memory serves he's double stringing and playing it faster than the young lady previously posted here. Prolly more the way you do it.

I really like it as a *fiddle tune* but  I also like when the full orchestra (featuring the violin section of course) comes in on the main theme.

... one of my favorite movies... should make an effort to buy the dvd. Then I'd have both the movie and the music. :D
