Yeah - love it. The interesting thing is how tense you look until you break into "you" - the comfort zone I guess, and brilliant it is too :)

Thanks Mark.

What happened was after I got booked to do the show I had to come up with some suggestions for tunes. I thought lets go for a jazz standard - fast swing tempo, because that is most in my comfort zone. Then I had a meeting with the musical director, we agreed Autumn Leaves - nice easy melodic chords, then he said we'll do it once through as a ballad then you do a 4 bar break to bring it into the fast tempo... I thought oh ******* ****** ****, so now I was going to have try and control bow shake on the most scary gig I had ever done.
I think the reason that I gave such a good performance for the swing part of the tune is that I was completely pumped with adrenalin and could now channel it having survived the ballad bit.

It's a great performance.

I've started playing my first jazz tune only recently with my duo partner. She's not very experienced with jazz violin either and we had quite a struggle with the rhythm.
The sheet music says "fast swing", too.
The great thing about that  is that the word  "fast" in German means (not translates, the same word)  "nearly".
So we're quite happy to deliver a piece in "nearly swing" tempo now :-) :-)

It's nice to see how much music can be made out of a really simple tune. It hasn't even got a B part, just the A part again up or down an octave.

The basic tune is just 8 bars long, then repeated down an octave. Everything else is variations and ornaments.

Harks back to that discussion in another topic about playing by ear and using improvisation :).

Here is another favourite of mine. A protest folk singer/songwriter on fiddle! Klaus der Geiger (Klaus the fiddler).
He is singing at a demonstration against the building of a new part of an airport.
The chorus goes:
No, no, we don't want your world
we don't want your power
we don't want your money
we don't want to hear about your lies
we want to destroy your lies

Think what you may politically but what he does on the fiddle and his way of singing are very impressive to me.

It looks like the bow i recently got for my medieval fiddle.
Like this: http://www.earlymusicshop.com/search.aspx/en-GB/?q=bow&p=3

Though how Klaus manages to play so precisely with it, i don't know. But then i haven't tried it on my modern fiddle yet *runsofftotry*

I've the impression it's pretty loose and he touches 3 or all 4 strings at once.

Make one, or purchase a toy bow and arrow set, the arrows would be handy for garden stakes.

Great vid that. Am I imagining it or has he got the bridge cut in a sort of wavy line? Only seen one other fiddle like that. Must try that bow pluck sing and hiccup trick!

I think it is a little slip of ebony under the E that makes the bridge look that way. Been wrong before...
I want to be a musician when I grow up.
Sorry, son, you can't do both.

clicky

And also Emilie Autumn.... she plays the electric violin, so this might now be to everyone's taste, but it's still a favourite of mine.

Here is another vid I like from the heavy metal band Eluveitie with fiddle and hurdy-gurdy.  My son turned me on to this band.  I know this tune with a different name but I can't think of it at the moment.
