I only ever saw Swarbs once, he came to my home town to perform with Martin Carthy just around the corner from my place way back when. After the show I saw him walking down the street, my wife said "go and talk to him". Nah, I don't want to bother him, so she runs after him and comes back with his autogragh. Yeah, Swarbs is the man.

Got any more of his (probable apocryphal)stories?

The ones about the man himself are often true (like narrowly avoiding death when a lorry ended up going through his bedroom wall and - years later - having his obituary published prematurely by the Daily Telegraph: http://www.alexlyons.co.uk/atrax/swarb_archive/obituary_files/telegraph_obituary.htm).

I'll have to have a think about any tune-related stories!

On one of the Fairport CDs there is the April Fools phone call when Simon Nichol, pretending to be a Scottish police man, called a hungover Swarb to tell him that a USAF plane had crashed into his newly bought (and not yet moved into) Scottish farm house. The USAF, said the "policeman" did not need insurance so, was he fully covered?- Nichol knew he wasn't yet.

When Swarb twigs, the rest of the track is unsuitable for children and maiden aunts.

This tune is one of my favs, you gotta' get it up to around 140, well that's how fast Swarbs plays it, sounds great though. The 3/4 bars have to stay, I spent hours on half speed. I always repeat before the double/note section. And the long A at the end finishes it nicely after all that chugging.

...

I seem to remember this is the tune he played against "open string above" all the way through, with flickyplucky bits?
Now ear this!

That's the one! No idea how he gets the flickyplucky effect, but then I was always reduced to playing his recordings at 16rpm to try to work out what he was doing anyway... :-\
