Mark, can you double-check this?  It doesn't work in Dm as-is.  I'm thinking maybe you mean:

Yes double stops can be entered by using square brackets - for example:

Some folk might be a little nervous about contributing when the chords are written in. For the sake of focusing on the melody, here is the tune without any chords.

 d2 f<d a<d e>c | B<d d<B f<B d>B| A<^c c>A  B<d d>B|

I like putting the chords in. Let's do it after the tune is finished so that the chord structure does not dictate the direction of the tune

Mark, I only stuck the chords there in the first place so you could hear my version of what I thought you had meant to write and OK it or veto it!   :spin:

For myself, when I'm writing tunes I like putting the chords in as I go because it helps me to perceive the overall structure of the tune and keeps me from getting too far off the track (the first strathspey I wrote, before I'd thought of doing this, has about 6 different musical ideas in it, any of which probably would have made a decent tune but together they're a mish-mash.  If I can find it I think I'll post it in the abc section so you all can laugh at it).  I'm fine with writing these tunes without chords and adding them later, though, especially if you think the chords are keeping people from contributing. -Steve

Steve, First of All. The minor change you made is great.
Second - you hit the nail dead on. I was thinking the chords slowed some folks down. That was my original reason and the part about dictating the progression of the tune kind of popped into my head.

Post the Mish Mash bro - gotta hear it. Besides it might not be Mish Mash to someone else. I firmly believe that a tune starts with the beginning. The rest of the tune writes itself. Perhaps you have six great tunes on your hands.

By the way, I have enjoyed everything that everyone has contributed so far. You make a good point. If someone see's a different direction that might entail a minor tweak - suggest it as you did.

Mark

Mark, I think I'd do something more like this with the chords in the last measure:

X:1
T:Hang it to dry.
R:Strathspey
A:Mark C,Steve W,Floyd
M:C
L:1/8
Q:1/2=60

"Dm" d2 f<d a<d "C" e>c |"Bb"B<d d<B f<B d>B|"A" A<^c c>A "Bb" B<d d>B|"Dm"(3Adf (3agf "A"(3efd (3cBF:|

You want to put your chords just in front of the notes or figure you want them over (under) on the printed page.

Also, I suppose this isn't an absolute but with strathspeys it's more traditional to play them ABAB rather than AABB; I'd substitute a double bar for your repeat. -Steve

I decided to finish this one. I had some stuff swimming around in my head and I had to let it loose. The best tempo suited for this tune is probably 72. I imagine that I will work quite hard on the B part and try to find some bowings that won't get me tangled. Once the B part is solid, I can tackle the A part with relative comfort.

I could use some help on the Chords in the B part. Please take a peek at them.

We created another one! Let's see how it sounds a week from now.

I'm very new to Strathspeys, but isn't a more usual rhythm

D<F F>A d>A c<G  | ? i.e. short long long short long short short long.

I have a sum total of three Strathspeys to look at (Cutting Bracken, Captain Campbell, Highland Whisky) and they all contain this form somewhere.

I'm planning on getting a copy of "The Fiddle Music of Scotland" by James Hunter when funds allow, so I'm prepared to be wrong.

You may very well right Martin. I am not fluid at all with strathspeys. Perhaps this one is just a tune without categorization. I like though.

I'd say it's a common rhythm but not an essential feature.  The Scottish snap (D<F for example, played downbow upbow) and dotted rhythm is what gives the Strathspey its character but the rhythm can vary all over the place; it's not necessarily short long long short, or long short short long (FWIW, there's also a figure called the driven bow, or up-driven bow, where a note combination like D<F F>A is played with a downbow on the initial note, and upbow for the other 3, played fairly staccato, that some people also call the Scottish snap, but the way I'm using the term is more common, I believe).

For that matter, I have one collection from the late 1700's which contains a bunch of strathspeys notated with fairly long stretches of even rhythm, with only the occasional snap thrown in (and I'm assuming that's the way they were played rather than a notational thing because there are others in that collection that have dotted rhythms).  But if you're objecting to all those triplets in the B part I agree with you, it's not typical of the style; I can't think of another strathspey with 8 bars of triplets!  I'm not sure all those triplets really work for a strathpey, actually.  :-\  -Steve

I suppose you all are quite right. I'll repeat what I said. This tune may not fit any category now. I'll repeat that I enjoy the tune no matter what it is.

I'll say this for the first time. I'm glad to see all this activity on this post. I kind of wished I'd seen some more during the writing phase. It would probably be a Strathspey if anyone else had retained a little interest in writing this tune. I truly felt sure that no one was going to touch it at all so I finished the way I wanted.

If you feel that the first 8 bars have promise as a strathspey, by all means go with it and write the real B part. We'll call the current B Part "MArk's Weird ending" Trust me in this one. I would love to see this piece as an official Strathspey. I would play it that way and then I would pull out my "alternate ending" to finish it off.

Please contribute a different B part and thanks for the info on strathspeys. Have a great weekend.

Sorry Mark, I didn't intend my comments to be a criticism of your efforts, so I hope you didn't take them that way!  I had intended to contribute more to this one but I've been busy the last couple days working on an upcoming fiddle/dance performance and haven't had a chance to think about any of these tunes. -Steve

Hey, FWIW, I really *liked* the version Mark just posted up there, but I'd be interested in a more correct strathespey too. Can we try one? We can always save either or both and use them as we like, right?

I dunno, but it seems like we're being careful to not insult each other by rewriting the others parts. As for me (and what I can read of Mark, him too) I don't care what you rewrite or remove of mine. I'm just along for the ride and not grinding out measures with sweat and blood. I don't have the proper tools to write it with yet anyway.

I'd think that if you *did* work very very hard on submissions to ABCs here and were pretty proud of your work and got upset if someone were to rewite it or change it, you may want to reconsider, or warn us. (I don't think that *I'll* be rewriting anything here, but some may, and even *should* possibly?) Maybe we need to work out a "plan" to write these things thats fair to everyone?

Jack

You guys pegged me. I was a little miffed on Friday. A bit proud of the B part because it suited me. I knew what you all were saying and it was by no means a criticism of what I wrote. It was a criticism of how what I wrote fit into the strathspey form.

Please don't sweat it. I apologize for get a little hot. You recognized the barely concealed acidity of my post for what it was.

Still, a part of what I said made good sense. If you feel that the A part has promise as a strathspey, Get the B part started and I will follow the true formwhen I contribute.
