Toward A Cliff The Blind Man Walks
« on: Jan 09, 2004, 04:10:31 PM »
I'm having such a great time creating music with you guys. I'd say we have done some really cool stuff and it's obvious that we can knock out a tune in nothing flat.

This time, I want to accomodate some of the folk who have missed out on the fun. This tune will have a few rules. I don't want to force anyone to sit on their creative hands but give it a shot for at least this one. We can have more free for alls anytime we wish.

Rules for this tune.

1) We will write a three part Reel with 8 measures per part.
2) Each Part will repeat.
3) Each part will be distinctive unto itself. In other words, The first four measures will not be a repeated in the last four measures of a part.
4) Write one measure at a time.
5) Do not post again for at least 3 measures.
6) Post 6 measures max in the tune. Including second endings. If you decide to add a pickup to the first measure, don't sweat it.
7) You can modify your measures by adding graces or other articulations after you post them. Just be sure that the measures that preced and follow still make sense.

If this turns out to be fun for all, great! We can do another like this when we have finished. Otherwise we can can scrap this one and go for another free for all. It's all in the name of fun and so far it's been a blast. Lets write.

Maybe there should be a rule about overuse of accidentals too. :) On this occasion, I thought we should get away from the Drowsy Maggie feel pretty, um, sharpish. (Arf arf.  ::) )

Cool Simon. I am so tempted to break the rules right now. DANG!

Anyone who comes up with a name for this, Please post it. Yada Yada Yada is my way of saying it's up for grabs.

Neat, Simon; I was thinking of something else entirely (much more conventional), but I'll give it a shot:

I like where it's going Steve.

"Up For Grabs" isn't a bad name for a tune actually. And yes, more people hurry up and post, I'm champing at the bit. ("Champing at the Bit" ?)

Trying to influence someone else's measure, isn't that bending the rules a little?  ;D

Nice title.

Ahh the challenge comes for the fifth measure. How to keep it from being a duplicate of measure one?

By the way, I think we need to come to a consensus here. We are writing public domain tunes. That is unless someone really wants to mess with the paperwork. Public domain - Yes or No.

Yeah, looks like it'll be tough to write something that'll keep the idea going without repeating.  I'd be very inclined to repeat the 1st measure here.  Glad it's not my turn again  ;D

Regarding public domain I vote yes.  I'd just be happy if anything I wrote got played by other people! -Steve

I really want to break my rule about waiting 5 posts. It means we need at least 6 people to create a tune. Maybe I'll start another to take the edge off.

As you will notice, I am the WORST at sitting on my hands. I changed waiting for 5 measures to 3. I hope everyone gets a chance.

Looks like we got bogged down and the tune is pretty cool. Let's go ahead and try just to skip posting for one measure.

Simon, As for your question. I went ahead let the E default back to the natural because it was the start of a new measure. I think it's better just to tell folk were the E is going to make it less confusing. Thanks for pointing that out.

Mark, yes, I guess you were right - I just read it as one E flat across the bar because it's tied, but yeah the barline restores the key sig. I think it is a case for putting in the natural anyway. I don't know what the rule is (or if there is one). It's funny, I've been reading music almost as long as I've been reading English, but whenever I try to write stuff I always come across fiddly little things like this that I'm not sure about. :)

I twisted a little but got confused. =c is supposed to be default yet it sounds more like an accidental when I used it. Yes I aimed for that but I wonder if the key signature of minor is actually correct? Hmmm

Nice work guys! That's a great ending Floyd. It's a three part reel IF we decide to keep going in that direction. Steve has me curious. I would love to hear what he had in mind. With that in Mind here is what it could look like now.

I do like the double stops but I think ther needs to be a second ending - it doesn't sound final enough to me - I think it needs to end on the G the second time around - I'm Floyd and thats my opinion. :)

I tend to stay away from 2nd endings in my writing because I think they tend to confuse things when you play tunes in sets, but I agree Floyd, your ending works better if we're going to make it a 3-parter.  Now who's going to start the next part? -Steve

I'll let you figure if and how a second ending will work for the B part. I started a C part. I can post straight through to the end of the tune. Let's see if anyone comes close. Post 2 measures at a time if you wish. It seems to allow you to complete your thoughts much better.

Hey - i spent about 1/2 hour on this last night and just coundn't come up with anything that didn't detract from the tune.  I can't listen to your addition from where I am at the moment Jack so Ill have to wait 'till I get home to comment on it but Im glad you made a contribution and I have a feeling its going to be good.

It'll work great Jack although it's not the direction I was looking at. Who cares? Once again, I have a new vision of where the tune will go. I wonder how far off I am from the next person's thoughts. This is cool.
