My mutes!
« on: Dec 09, 2003, 05:32:27 PM »
Ok, I took some pics of my mutes. Seems some people here may of never seen one, and I didn't know what one was for a long time.

First, here's my metal one. I got it from my dad.

Its all metal, and the three feet there to the right all have a narrow slot in them. You put this on the bridge and the feet straddle the strings.

Ok, here's one I made:

Its made from a spring paperclip and a nut and bolt and some washers. Its customisable, you can add or remove washers! ;) I made a notch in it so that it straddles one string on the bridge. I usually use it over the A string, but you can put it on anywhere.

If I really want full muting, I put the metal one on there and then put this homemade one on that mute! It really quiets it down.

One tip for having/using a mute: if you practice with it on and try to play really loud, thats helpful in getting your bow to be plenty loud and agreassive.

Best not to practise too often with a mute, though. It does tend to hide some tonal errors. Personally I wouldn't practise with a mute more than once a year, if that.

I've trained the family quite well! ;D

Hey Jack, Do you sell the less rustic version of the homemade mute? I want mine with a shiny bolt, nut and washers. I'll pay extra if you put a butterfly decal on the clip. It'll make it more elegant, I think.

Mark, I don't sell em, but you can make one of your own. Its pretty simple. I imagine that there are some chrome paperclips out there. Look for one! ;)

I don't have a picture, but I've got a good mute that I only gave 1 dollar for!  Actually, it's a 1 dollar bill rolled up tight and intertwined between the strings below the bridge and above the tailpiece.

Of course this mute also comes in 5 dollar, 10 dollar, etc. prices, but they don't sound a bit better than the 1 dollar model!  ;D

Dale, you still think I'm trying to get a rise out of you with my mute? I use it. I can get you pics of it on the bridge and in use. The metal mute is on the fiddle right now with the home made one on that mute. No kidding!
