Porch Pickin'
« on: Jun 21, 2007, 10:22:45 AM »
Such gorgeous weather brings me to the outdoor porch.  Mandolin is the instrument of choice under these circumstances...  Don't want to subject the neighbors to the screechings of my violin playing!   :P

So...  I haven't played the mando for a year!  Shameful, I know!  Took it out of it's case and to the porch...  "Doing....doing... doing...doing (rhymes with boing).  WOW!  It's in tune!  (Well, the 5ths are still in place, but it's prolly sunk a half-step or more (I thinks to meself)  ...but it sounds in tune!)  Tinker around abit, play a few tunes... and woo wee, how fun!

Just now, I checked the strings with an official tuner...  It read:  GG DD AA EE
WHOAH!  My mando is special!  In tune for a whole year!  WOW!   ;D

Been thinking I might get myself in touch with a mandolin... Have never owned one and I think it would be fun.  Must be a good mandolin you have, Diddle.  I know nada about them... same tuning as fiddles, GDAE?  Sorry for the dumb question... Have fun!

Yeah...  You'd love it, mm...

Same tuning as fiddle, but ya pluck it like a guitar!  Unique tone, too... fun stuff!

Hope all is well, mm!   :)

I've been hanging out on the porch with my mando, too. We moved into this little house a year ago and it's got this great porch. My daughter enjoys hearing it (mine says pling pling) while she looks for bugs or tumbles on the lawn. There was an old wooden "shabby chic" lawn chair in the back yard when we moved in, a three-legger. Pretty easy to fix, now it's a standard four-legged chair and is perfect for mando pickin'. Or messing with my new (1920's) parlor guitar.

I plan on hanging out on the bench in front of my farmhouse playing my mando this summer if the damn rain ever stops over here!

Not only good for porches - I keep mine at work where the fiddle's a little loud.  The mandolin at lunch is great for learning new fiddle tunes.
