They have silent banjos!  You can usually find them in the section next to the air guitars.

The bottom-of-the-line Line6 Variaxe has both "banjo" and "sitar" pre-set models. You just have to plug it into a headphone amp. If you want the banjo tuning, I suppose you'd have to put banjo *strings* on, too! ;)

www.tranjo.com makes a wicked looking headless collapsible travel banjo that has an option of a nylon mesh head for silent practice.

And I'll take the lead on the "collapsible banjo" jokes that mine collapses too when I pitch it off the balcony!

I've heard a swimming pool (or the ocean) will act as a
mute for a banjo. This works for bagpipes too...

Silent and banjo are two words that simply don't fit together. :D

Like the old Guild Ashbory electric bass? (Fender is making them again)
http://www.ashelec.demon.co.uk/ashbory/ :)

Can resonator banjos be filled with expanding foam or something? You could cover the hole with the "WARNING: Banjo player!" sticker.

I have a jpg of a banjo mute that I found online sometime in the past.  I can't post pics, but if anyone wants to do it for me, let me know.  It's brilliant...  ;)

look at this!

http://www.folkofthewood.com/page5433.htm

"an invaluable accessory for the beginner who may find that practicing with the Silencer will make the learning process less harsh on the ears...will also ensure that others support your practicing efforts..."

and it comes with thumbscrews! - for when others no longer support your practicing efforts.
