A Way to see Chords and lyrics on the printed ABC page ?
« on: Apr 16, 2006, 04:13:35 PM »
Hi guys

I use ABC Navigator and always use that program to write fiddle tunes.Recently I've decided to try and write guitar chords in some of the tunes so that our gutar player can have an easier time finding the chords... I see that in ABC the way to write chords is to use quote marks, for example: for a G chord you write "G" at the beginning the measure..ok, fine...  but when I view the tune in ABC Navigator the chord is in the code part but not in the print-out page .. is there a way to print the chords out with the score, or am I still going to have to pencil in the chords for the guitar player ? Or do I need a different ABC program to achive a printed page with chords visable  ???
Happy Easter

thanks for any tips

I don't understand your problem.  Writing any text surrounded by quotes in abc code will result in that text being placed above (or below if you have an editor with that option) the staff at that point in the music line.  [If what you put in quotes is interpretable as a chord by a MIDI player, it will play in midi, but at any rate the text should show on the output.]  Am I missing something?  I've never used ABC Navigator so can't tell you if this is an issue with that program.  You might want to try your code on the online tune-o-tron converter at http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html and see if it works there. -Steve

Don't know how to change it, but could it be a "smart quote" problem?

Hey guys

Yes Steve, thanks for the Concertina.net link ... when I insert a tune there the chords show up ... Im not sure why  they aren't showing up in my ABC Navigator program ... maybe I ought to see if there's any newer versions that have fixed this problem ...  hmmm
I wonder what other ABC programs let you print chords ?

Printing chords is a standard feature of the ABC language and should work on all interpreters; your problem is puzzling.  I think Swarbrules might be onto something with smart quotes, though.  Regarding abc programs I highly recommend BarFly, but it's only available for Mac's.  It's by far my favorite of all the abc programs I've used. -Steve

Hmm...

I just tried it in ABC Navigator here at my office and it worked fine. I didn''t try lyrics, just chords.

Ok guys, I see what's going on ....   I've been running one of the first versions of ABC Navigator ...the one with the orange background .... I see now that they have later versions that correct problems...  I just downloaded the newer, grey-background version ...now my chords are showing up ... ha .. sorry for the false alarm ... I didn't realize that they
were patching up ABC Navigator..    :P
