Conkers to conquer
« on: Jan 25, 2006, 10:52:39 PM »
is the title of a book we publish for local use, subtitled "A New Collection of Old Chestnuts."

Buckeyes, for us North Americans

It exists electronically in the form of about 5 dozen .NWC files, for NoteWorthy Composer and comprises only tunes in the public domain. I suppose the slickest way to get them out here is to chuck them into the Noteworthy Scriptorium. Better idea? Some way to put them here on the forum? Is it even worth the bother? They are all well-known tunes, some would say beginner tunes... any interest?

Sorry, son, you can't do both.

Here's how I format a tune for the kids, with a chord letter for each strum:

Most of the tunes fit on half an 8.5" x 11" sheet, probably no squeeze on the narrower A4.

Here are the first two. You will need the Boxmarks font to print them properly. You can download that freely from the NoteWorthy Scriptorium, I believe. Most of the other text is Garamond, but there are a few oddities in that department. Margins have been set so that, in most cases, two tunes fit on a page (four on a sheet of paper) with one pass through the printer for each tune.

There it is. The following text shows up on the cover of the book we put together. Comb-binding rules.  ;D
====================================

These tunes are mostly old chestnuts, tried and true veterans of the fiddling tradition. They will be familiar at most sessions or jams, certainly in the New England area. Old-timey tunes and bluegrass favorites are under-represented here, merely because we don't know that many of them. Just about every tune in the collection  is a dance tune. Played at the proper lively tempo, they are meant to give lift to the dancers' feet, and mark the figures of the dance. This is why many of them are 32-bar jigs or reels, when played AABB. A good contra-dance caller knows when the dancers have got the feel of any particular dance, and so when to stop hollering at the dancers, to let the music tell them what is going on. A good dance band will use the phrasing of the tune to help the dancers stay aware of where they are in every flying moment. Good dancers may listen to the melody for cues, but they pay more attention to the pulse that drives that melody, so they can fit into each pattern that comes their way.

Please keep in mind that music is pulse and sound, and lines with spots on paper are only inky paper. For now let's call the inky paper "notes," and save the word "music" for what we make with our hands, ears and hearts. The notes are a reminder, a way to remember how a tune goes. Once you can play the tune without looking at the book, and can make it sound interesting, and maybe even notice that other people around you are moving with your sound, then you are making music. Remember that the written notes are only a starting place, a group of ideas for keeping a tune together, and not the only "right way" to play the tune. All the same, if you play a tune exactly as it is written here, very likely someone else will recognize it, maybe even call it a different name, and show you how they play it. Happy listening!

====================================
on the inside cover, there's the following stuff on modes and links:
====================================

By the way, a Mixolydian scale is a Major scale with a flat seventh.
It has one more flat or one less sharp than that Major scale.

A Dorian scale is a minor scale with a sharp sixth.
It has one more sharp or one less flat than that minor scale.

“So many tunes, so little time!” You will find many more tunes in:
The Fiddler’s Fakebook by David Brody, Oak Publications, 1983
New England Fiddler’s Repertoire  by Randy Miller and Jack Perron, Fiddlecase Books, 1983
The Portland Collection by Susan Songer, 1997
or on line at John Chambers’ abc tunefinder: http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/FindTune.html

I want to be a musician when I grow up.
Sorry, son, you can't do both.

Sorry about the post-o-rrhea. I could only attach two at a time.

The best application to open them is NoteWorthy Composer. There is a free viewer/printer program downloadable on their site, but I've not tried it. I bet it works fine though, they seem to be a good outfit.

Best thing I can say about NoteWorthy is that it seems to have been built to use, as opposed to having been built to sell. I like it a lot; it does everything I want it to do.

I'm guessing that some of the big score-editing applications might be able to import .nwc files, but I do not know.

I want to be a musician when I grow up.
Sorry, son, you can't do both.

The zip file with all the tunes is now available at the NoteWorthy Scriptorium.
