Silly question, but...how to hang a fiddle on the wall?
« on: Jan 02, 2003, 02:01:34 PM »
This is a dumb question, but do they make some sort of hardware you can buy that hangs a fiddle securely on the wall? I have the standard guitar stands which sit on the floor to hold my guitars, but that wouldn't work for me with a fiddle, as my cats would definately knock it right over.

Any ideas?

I have seen something on ebay with a wood plachard and two fancy wood pins that support the instrument by the pegs. You could probably make one of these yourself with minimum tools.

Well....I sell the hangers and gig stands for violins that include a bow holder! Not to blow trumpets of course! But... the gig stands (with bow holder) can be ordered from any music shop in the UK that has dealings with the distributor, Barnes and Mullins. Can't remember where I get the wall hangers from.

I bought two small coat hooks (79 cents each) and mounted them on the wall with two screws each.  Bought a pair of leather boot laces ($1.59) and cut and tied two loops.  Now I have two fiddles hanging on the wall (at six feet high for mine and five feet high for my daughter's).  Been working just fine for 8 months now.

I've seen two possible ways:

1.  The top part of a guitar stand (little half circle that supports the neck) is mounted on a piece of wood that can screw into the wall.  They aren't very common in stores and aren't the best idea to hang a violin on....it would have to be supported by the pegs.

2.  This one's homemade.  Screw a hook into the wall (forgive my lack of correct wording).  You can use wire hanger or a strong wire to make a wire circle to wrap around the scroll and to hang on the hook in the wall.  Adjust as you see fit.  Maybe put padding on the wall so the violin isn't scratched, etc.   Hope you find a solution.

I use a leather from some old suspenders, with a hook on the wall.  I use them for mandolin, banjo, duclimer.  They work well for all.

i think it's not a silly quetion at all.

for classical violins i use the classic hook on the wall with a leather string. it is very easy to hang the violin from the scroll.
This is the classic way used since 1700.

To avoid the back of the violin scratch on the wall i append a soft cloth to the same hook, just let it drop from the hook as it came, it works perfectly.
