Title: What is your favorite Youtube violin video?
Post by: fourstrings on Sep 18, 2008, 12:46:02 AM
What is everyones favorite youtube (or anywhere) violin vid?

My favorite all around one is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MFxEjber7E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MFxEjber7E)
This is one that inspired me to start violin again, I think it would have been better without the background music.

Great videos!  I love the tiny violin.  LOL

My favorite youtube is anything by this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFtv5qe5o3c) guy.   ;D  ;D  Maybe I just want to wear a pastel ballgown.   ;)

OK..just kidding, although Andre there is always so darned happy

Anything by Heifetz.  This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yexrDPEfDRw&feature=related) is interesting with the slow motion photography.

I'm awfully fond of this:

Gilles Apap certainly has a sense of humor,
and does a good job of nailing some folk fiddle styles-
and the blues section just cracks me up!

Just one favorite? Here's the one I think of, if asked:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKJqlST2WZk
A Guarani guy with what seems to be a German Strad copy, if I hear them right, at the beginning. Natnot should not view this one, as there are st#ck#rs on the fiddle.

Hey, Chris! (I got nowhere fast looking for Guarani fiddler... Guarani violin popped it out on top)

If anyone is looking for the dots of Madame Neruda, that's how to spell it. Lots of arpeggios related to E flat major. The distinguished fiddler morphs the "u" in his speech similar to the way someone from southwest England might say "hauyce" instead of "house."

That kid playing upon Pachelbel sure gets his mileage out of a saw-stroke, yes? That was fun to listen to...

Am I crazy (don't answer that!) or is Alex Depue the same hair as Alexi from "tiny violin"?

Have you guys not seen Alex Depue?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHC_Qyov2Xc

That's a good one too.  Saw him live with Steve Vai several months ago at the Keswick Theater.  He was good, but Ann Marie Calhoun overshadowed him that evening.  She played amazingly well, and was a better entertainer IMO. Mark Wood's band opened up.

Yeah, I love that one lots too.
He plays better in stunt positions than most fiddlers
do normally- manages to pull good tone.
Where he pulls the worst tone is also the funniest-
holding the bow between his legs and rubbing the fiddle
against the bow- I've NEVER seen anyone else do that.
And just when you think you've seen it all, he puts down the fiddle and plays...
oh go ahead, watch it, I won't spoil that for you!

I can't wait for shoes like that to come back in style.

That last bit was astonishing, especially if you consider the right/left coordination, and lead time he had to generate for the right hand. I'd seen something like that in the days of live B&W TV, only the instrument there generated a constant tone. Much simpler. Willie Hall still rules.

I dunno... sounds/looks like pretty serious fun to me.
I play electric guitar too, mostly bluesy stuff, but I can
appreciate a good rock solo, and this is a GOOD rock solo-
in spite of the crazy stuff, it retains ummm... a sense of musicality
throughout.  And I listened to his other stuff- quite varied styles and approaches-
good intonation, good tone, dramatic playing, creative arrangements,
good composing skills... it just goes on!

Thanks for posting that!

fir me, its the fiddlers 3 vid of OBS.. its an omph thang ! it never fails to fill me with I have to learn that !

There is also a vid of a quartet playing da slockit light which I just adore as its the only vid of said tune on you tube where they actually get the melody right. You often find with shetland tunes that by the time they cross the atlantic the melody has been someone disturbed and the tune is therefor lost, but these guys did they're research & learned to play it correctly.

I can't find my favourite video on YT at the moment.

It's a clip of Kevin Burke when he was in the Bothy Band - but it's not fiddle playing... it's him singing Mrs Gilhooley's Party!

Maybe it got pulled? I downloaded it and have it on my PC, but it'd be sad if it wasn't still up there...

My favourite violin video is an ad. from Pantene. It's really a very encouraging ad! The story tells a deaf and mute girl who learned violin and the music through her heart, she overcame all the difficulties and at last she succeed just like the butterfly break through cocoon!
I was moved to tears when I watched this ad. At that time I had just learned violin for 2 weeks and faced a lot of stones on my way. I really encouraged by this video! I hope one day I can also play my favourite song CANON beautifully!

Just come across this one Verena Commins And Julie Langan - The Commodore, Tommy Peoples', Sean Ryan's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8oBSOQhOoE#ws-lq-lq2-hq) (via the session web site) and thought it was a great example of understated classy traditional style playing - and 3 great tunes to boot!. Not a huge fan of button accordions as they tend to drown out the fiddle but while that does happen here a bit there is a nice blend too. Great rhythm - you just have to tap your foot -without so much as a bead of sweat being expended. Wish I could do it like this.

I am absolutely dumbfounded. It just dawned on me that there are 4 pages of these in here. Some of this stuff is just incredible. it's..it's..ok..ok..I've got a word for it. floccinaucinihilipilificated. How some people can play these little 4 stringed miracles so well is totally beyond my comprehension, no kidding.

I've obviously missed out on a LOT by not exposing myself (or possibly not having access) to this kind of thing.

Now I'm gonna hafta go thru all these vids. Just not enough hours in the day.

Quote

The Mormons were run out of several places in the early 1800's, and they tried settling a swamp that nobody else wanted, called the place Nauvoo. It got to be larger than Chicago for a while. Then they were run out of there and went west to Salt Lake. Now that times have changed, the church has bought back some of the land in Nauvoo and is slowly reconstructing the place as a historical exhibit, designed to entertain and educate tourists on vacation. There are several days worth of things to see - general store, drugstore, print shop, Brigham Young's house, craft exhibits and demos, horse-drawn "tour buses" etc. plus they put on several shows daily as you see there. Mormon kids (teens, and grandparents too) come and staff the exhibits and shows. They also have performers come and play, like bagpipe groups, etc; anything related to "old timey" in general. A couple of other churches that tie into this history have exhibits there also, plus the old town itself that survived after the Mormons left. It's pretty fun. My daughter did this last summer, played trumpet in the brass band.

Here is my addition. This is a video of a friend of mine, James Strauss (flute virtuouso and last student of Rampal). This piece was written especially for him. There is a string orchestra accompanying him (Israeli, I forgot which one. And, he's Brazilian, not Israeli) and all the instruments are Strads and Guarnerius.

Yeah - love it. The interesting thing is how tense you look until you break into "you" - the comfort zone I guess, and brilliant it is too :)

Thanks Mark.

What happened was after I got booked to do the show I had to come up with some suggestions for tunes. I thought lets go for a jazz standard - fast swing tempo, because that is most in my comfort zone. Then I had a meeting with the musical director, we agreed Autumn Leaves - nice easy melodic chords, then he said we'll do it once through as a ballad then you do a 4 bar break to bring it into the fast tempo... I thought oh ******* ****** ****, so now I was going to have try and control bow shake on the most scary gig I had ever done.
I think the reason that I gave such a good performance for the swing part of the tune is that I was completely pumped with adrenalin and could now channel it having survived the ballad bit.

It's a great performance.

I've started playing my first jazz tune only recently with my duo partner. She's not very experienced with jazz violin either and we had quite a struggle with the rhythm.
The sheet music says "fast swing", too.
The great thing about that  is that the word  "fast" in German means (not translates, the same word)  "nearly".
So we're quite happy to deliver a piece in "nearly swing" tempo now :-) :-)

Title: Re: What is your favorite Youtube violin video?

The basic tune is just 8 bars long, then repeated down an octave. Everything else is variations and ornaments.

Harks back to that discussion in another topic about playing by ear and using improvisation :).

Here is another favourite of mine. A protest folk singer/songwriter on fiddle! Klaus der Geiger (Klaus the fiddler).
He is singing at a demonstration against the building of a new part of an airport.
The chorus goes:
No, no, we don't want your world
we don't want your power
we don't want your money
we don't want to hear about your lies
we want to destroy your lies

Think what you may politically but what he does on the fiddle and his way of singing are very impressive to me.

I know Natalie is now one of the Leahy family too but her performance on this video is in my view  exceptional.

She plays the Scottish reel Tullochgorum (a.k.a. The Corn Bunting or The Blue Hill) with all six variations written to the tune by James Scott Skinner. This was first published in the Harp & Claymore Collection in 1904.

Well worth a look:

I have no idea what the introductory tune is.
Enjoy.

At a wee bit faster than normal speed (because of the set context), it's the "Laird of Drumblaire".

Not to be too picky, but the tune really changes it's type (really was a strathspey) when played at that speed. The 'up-bow snap' disappears. Just saying ...

Interesting too, that historically the band always wanted that deeply 'Scots' sound to the tunes. Now it's more kinda  .. .er...Irish!! Just saying ...

Excellent fiddling from both guys :)

Gotta laugh at the Doug Kershaw clip posted earlier in this thread. He's one guy who doesn't need a shoulder rest, or a chin rest - or even a chin!!

Breaking all the rules about holding the fiddle correctly, utter self-indulgence, crowd-pleasing, all the things some people hate - but he still manages to get a good tone from his fiddle. Listen, esp at the end, just before he's about to do an early "Who"-style rock-concert-gear-smash-up :)

Ma's changed his grip on the bow more along the lines of what Mark does. Says it works better on Bach too - gives "a tremendous variety of inflection without losing rhythmic clarity." You know you've arrived when you can teach Yo-yo Ma.

Or it just may indicate the superiority of the TUF grip, which shows up especially in fast playing that requires rhythmic clarity.
I basically noticed the same thing after switched to Thumb Under Frog and getting used to it-
definitely clearer, definitely more rhythmic precision.
Every time I try to go back to a conventional thumb on stick grip, it feels SO ponderous and mushy...
like driving an old Buick with a soft mushy suspension and sloppy steering.  And I don't think it's because I'm not used to it, I think it's an inherent weakness in the conventional grip.
I think people learn to compensate for that weakness, but it's nicer NOT to have to compensate for it, and put your energy into just playing music.

I do admit to being surprised, though, that TUF even works for cello!!!

Each to his /her own, whatever works, etc . I use the conventional TOS hold - have done for years. The TUF feels awkward and insecure to me ... the only thing that I think is of any physical importance is that the TOS is more secure than the TUF, and this would be important when tilting the bow in and out quickly.

excuse me but.... what's da name a dat tune? Is it a traditional tune? Really almost sure it's in that movie *Last of the Mohicans* reason I ask is I thought the main theme for the movie was so nice I decided to learn it. The basic theme is fairly simple. And I guess this tune would be fairly simple for all yous fiddle players. But in the movie it was done a bit faster than this and a bit more complicated and I really liked it. I thought the person who did the music for the movie just composed this along with all the other variations to the main theme cuz it's kinda similar. Anyways, really like this little tune. What is it? Scottish? Irish? I'm thinking more Scottish-ish...but what do I know ;D If I would or could do fiddle tunes, this is the style I'd be drawn to.

hold the phone! I only listened to the first half of the vid before I made the post. So I get back to the computer (fiddle in hand) thinkin' *I'm gonna learn this thing* but this time I'm thinking I should listen to the vid all the way thru. To my utter amazement and delight, she goes into the main theme of Yes Last of the Mohicans for the second half of the vid.

I'm hooked now- forget the diminished scales for the time being- I'm gonna learn this if it kills me.

If any one could turn me on to an additional link (is showing a close up of a finger board asking too much :D) would be very much appreciated!

BV  it's called The Gael.  We play it, a lot faster, in part of our Songs You KNow from the Movies set.  Fun tune that lends to a lot of improv....

The Gael...thanks Cap! There's a scene in the movie where they're having a little party in the fort and a fiddler is playing the * fiddle portion* of the main theme. If memory serves he's double stringing and playing it faster than the young lady previously posted here. Prolly more the way you do it.

I really like it as a *fiddle tune* but  I also like when the full orchestra (featuring the violin section of course) comes in on the main theme.

... one of my favorite movies... should make an effort to buy the dvd. Then I'd have both the movie and the music. :D

I'm fiddler over there.  My son turned me on to Eluveitie thinking I would like Evocation 1 and it's become one of my favorite albums.  Can't wait for the 2nd one!

Now I see that you played viola on Gobanno, otherwise known as Julia Delaney!  It's slower tempo than I'm used to playing it for contra dances but very nice indeed.

That wouldn't be you third from the left in the picture would it?

I see! You're not so active on Elu's forum - well it has become a kind of nice but rather closed little community, they hardly discuss the band anymore :-).
No that girl in the picture is Linda Suter .  She left Eluveitie shortly after the second record before the band's career really lifted off (the photograph in the video you posted is much older than the recording of Gobanno/Julia Delaney's). Today she is playing as a duo with a singer/songwriter, more kind of jazzy stuff. She is a very creative musician but she never really was into the "celtic", nor the "Metal" thing.
I used to play in a rather obscure and experimental folk band together with her as well as Meri, Chrigel and Päde who are members of Eluveitie today (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DiVgeRFIUw# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DiVgeRFIUw#) - I'm the dark-haired one in the middle of the band photo which appears arond 0:40  ). We had a great time but that band never really developed very far musically, and after a while Chrigels attention was increasingly taken up with Eluveitie, which didn't help our project...
But there was never a question of me playing in Eluveitie as a band member so i never made it onto a photograph or into a video. to be honest when they started it i was very sceptical about it.
When they went for an "acoustic" album (well it's not that acoustic, nor "trad", is it) i got invited to play on "Gobanno" and "Within the grove". I like the second one better, and you can hear more of me :-) I really really like Evocation I and when their most recent record (Everything remains as it never was) came out i really became a fan of their music too - before that, it was more kind of "wow, my friends are getting more and more successful with their music, isn't that amazing". I'm really happy for them that it worked out so well.

This will be my first post (I just joined today). Been in love with "Celtic Music" ever since Riverdance came out. Ive been a listener for 15+ years ... I love watching these videos because they keep me inspired, focused and motivated -- because for my "mid-life crisis" I decided to pick up the fiddle at 40 y/o and be a participant instead of just a fan . 10 months later and Im loving it.

Heres my contribution to this list. It is Irish Fiddler -Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh- he is playing the hardanger fiddle here (i believe). This video is my favorite of FIVE you can watch on YouTube.

hey Howie, I've had the same problem for close to a year (forum members cheer) couldn't post thru google chrome at work. But now back on line at home, can post thru Internet explorer (forum members sigh in resignation). The link appears, and when posted, the vid magically appears (at least most of the time anyways I think)

And here's one I thought was pretty valuable: Yo-yo Ma explains performing. I think of it in just this same way.
YO-YO MA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIKdv0mjg6k#noexternalembed)
"I met Bobby [McFerrin] at Tanglewood - right here - when we were all here together to celebrate Leonard Bernstein's 70th birthday. The great thing about working with Bobby is that he will incorporate anything that happens into the thing that we're supposedly doing on stage... it's all fine! And that's really wonderful.

"Bobby says 'look, you know, you just have to remember one thing' - to not be self-conscious was to not judge myself when you're on stage - everything was OK. That actually changed my life.

"All you have to do to get onstage is to just remember that and be yourself. And that was perhaps the biggest lesson - performing lesson - of my life.

"The most important thing about performing is to make magic - to make a special moment in time. The whole process, to me, is never about proving something; but it's about sharing something."

I love fiddlesticks.  I'd tune AEAE and my wife would play fiddlesticks at our shows.  We'd have kids come up to try it out and they'd have a blast.  Also when I was playing with a country-rock band up at a ski resort I had the drummer play fiddlesticks on my electric fiddle.  He had never heard of it before, no one in the bar had either but with a rock drummer combined with an electric cranked up it was quite the fun experience! Love springing fiddlesticks on unsuspecting folks.  Hmm, I'll have to try it out on my five string, haven't done that yet.

ok ok, that riff at 1:42 - 1:43. Ponty built a whole movement around it on I believe it was Enigmatic Ocean, and I'm not quite sure of the wording of the title of the cut off the top of my head... something like "The struggle of the turtle to the sea"

Actually there are a couple of other riffs in there that he modifies and expands into the *Turtle* movement.

This is my favorite Ponty piece. It's got it all. High energy, Power and Beauty.

Butt anyways, I particularly enjoyed those double stop riffs at 1:35 - 1:40. I wonder what those intervals might be. That bit (not butt) was worth the whole thing for me.

I couldn't make butt nor tail of it! To be honest, I couldn't isolate the violin from the rest of the noise in that clip, for the most part. She did do some nice licks, tho. On the violin. I'll like to hear her playing in a quieter setting.

If you count "Pagan Metal" as popular music and think frequent smiles plus headbanging synchronized  with the other female band member qualify as "good performance", you should check out Meri Tadic from Eluveitie :-)

Anyway about seeming to enjoy oneself: On nearly all pictures of myself fiddling in public i make a silly or even grumpy face. Though I enjoyed all those performances a lot. I've been unhappy with this a lot.
Nowadays i just put it down to the fact that we have to hold our instruments with our chins!

Yes, that can be quite annoying. Fortunately, it needn't be that way. If you don't know her yet, check out Zoe Keating. hmm, just checked out Zoe Keating on youtube and she is quite good at looping and arranging at the same time IMO.

In general looping has one big drawback imo - almost every song has to be build up step by step - that is why it takes forever to get a song going..

Well, it's even worse if you play solo without a looper  ;)

Sorry for going a little off-topic:
For me a looper is more than an effect box. It has to be learned like an instrument. And if you use it creatively, you can get some amazing music out of it.
If anybody is interested in this, I very much recommend the Looper's Delight (http://www.loopers-delight.com/loop.html) mailing list. There is also a LiveLooping channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/livelooping?ob=0) on youtube with some very inspiring videos.

I'm guessing it's like everything else : be creative, be good, be original, but that's easier said than done, isn't it? To be honest I'd get more satifaction from using a backing track, or warm bodies, but that's just me.

Lorient may not be the most beautiful city of Brittany, but the festival was really great. Lots and lots of different bands from all celtic nations and from all kinds of musical styles. You could hear the whole range from traditional folk to folk-rock, folk-jazz and folk-punk. The only downside was that I couldn't stand listening to bagpipes for a while afterwards. After ten days of bagpipes (the worst could be heard from a tent on the camping site) I really had enough.  :)

btw I've met the fiddler, Patrik Andersson, once - he was a teacher in a workshop I participated in in Sweden. Great fiddler and a really nice guy.

My current favorite, for sheer fiddle virtuosity:

Adam DeGraff, covering "Sweet Child of Mine". Incredible. How may parts can someone play simultaneously? Sounds like a few fiddles playing along with an electric guitar. Simply amazing. And it doesn't appear that he is multi-tracking.

It almost doesn't seem humanly possible.   :o

Ditto on Lindsey Stirling.  I just recently discovered her Youtube videos while randomly browsing for violin stuff.  I particularly like the work she did with Peter Hollen on Skyrim, and her Lord of the Rings Medley.  Very refreshing to see young folk doing something other than pop and run-of-the-mill hip-hop.

Thats how I found Lindsey as well as the group Bond.  Yes, that is one I particularly like as well.  Would really like to see them perform in my area one day.

There is another Venessa-May who I ran across on YouTube as well.  She did an exceptional job with Toccata & Fugue which I had only heard with just a pipe organ (E. Power Briggs performing) when I was young.

The current music is mostly rubbish...

I am not so much a fan of Lindsey Stirling. While I see she is clearly comfortable, relaxed and flexible etc, I find her body movements over the top and quite off-putting. With the few I've seen I would prefer to hear it and not see it. I do like the videos themselves, ie camera work and editing and all that.

This is my fave at the moment. I've been trying to play Johnny Sunshine (the second tune in the set) for about 5 years after hearing it played on a Liz Doherty recording. I can do all of it and most of it fast but I find the C part (as at 3:02 & 3:43) fiendishly hard to do at high speed, it's one of those finger twisters.  So it's nice to see the lady who wrote the tune play it to try to get some tips on the fingering. I only wish I had a way to slow mo it!  The trick seems to be to flick that first finger out of the way while keeping the second and third locked down. We'll see...... :)

What would you say those facial expressions mean there with that gal playing Johnny Sunshine? This is something I've been puzzling over for a while. The violist playing Pletnev's viola concerto
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW25ajISypw&list=PL773F180AE7593BF2> also makes some wild accusations with his eyebrows. Could it be something like how people hold their tongue out when they poke a beehive with a stick?

I think the last long laser-eyed look over at her hubby  means "I'm gonna finish it this time so make sure you do as well buddy!
The rolling eyes at the beginning are probably "why did I pick something so kid-easy to play in front of all these people, I really need a challenge".
I've met her a couple of times and she's one of the most helpful people and one of the best teachers you could ever meet.

Serendipity! When I said that I liked Sheila's playing, I just meant on the video I posted. I only knew about the video because of the recommendation on the other fiddle site. But when you said 'Session Tunes Blue Book', I looked it up - then I wondered. You see, a few weeks ago, we were up in York, my home town, and in Banks', the music shop, and picked up three fiddle-tune books - I could have bought the shop.

They're still in the bag because I've been so busy with Fiddle Guru's set pieces - but I just looked, and hey, one of them is the Session Tunes Blue Book!  :)
