Hello to all my friends from Fiddle Hell Buxton.  This is not really fiddle news, but I just wanted to tell you all, I auditioned for the Halle Youth Orchestra last week, and have just heard I have got in.  Robbie says I will have to teach them some fiddle tunes!!

Rachel.

Congratulations Rachel, that's great news. I played with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (quite a long time ago!) and it was still some of the best musical fun I've ever had, playing in the big concert halls with some great conductors. You're going to have a blast. Well done.

[Edit: I typed this next bit before Tize beat me to the "post" button. ;) ]
And Robbie is right. You'll have to bring lots of string players to Fiddle Hell next year.  ;D

Great news Rachel! Well done... I believe a girl who went to the same school as me in Brighton, Adi Brett is in the full orchestra... She always was a superb player so you'll be in great company...

Thanks Woody.  The violin (Woody) is still brilliant, and Robbie isn't too bad either.

Congratulations Rachel, that's definately news of the best sort and well worth broadcasting!
Playing in my local Youth Symphony Orchestra was an experience I will cherish and never forget.
You will benefit so much from being with such an orchestra.

Well done,
Richard

Congratulations Rachel. That is excellent news. I am not surprised that you have been selected, because when I heard you play earlier this year I thought that both you and Robbie were extremely competent musicians.

Good luck and have fun  8)

Congratulations Rachel! Like Chris, it doesn't surprise me one bit that you got in after hearing you at Buxton this year. I look forward to you and Robbie playing again next year, and it would be really good if some of the other string players in the orchestra could make it too. I'm sure you'll have a great time, playing in an orchestra can be a lot of fun. :)

Well done Rachel.

The quality of your playing shone through at Buxton so, I'm not surprised you were successful. Good luck in your grade 8 and here's to your move to the leader's chair.

Thanks everyone.  I am just back from my 4th rehearsal with the Halle Youth.  We saw Tom Kitchen on Macclesfield Station the 1st time we went, he was playing a gig in Nottingham.  I'm playing in the second violin section.  It is hard work keeping up as the tunes are really tricky, but I am really enjoying it.  We are playing "Pictures from an Exhibition" by Ravel and Tschiakowsky's "The Nutcracker Suite" and we have 2 concerts in December.

I forgot to mention about my Grade 8, me and my teacher have decided to put it off until March.  My tunes are fine but I'm not too good with the aural and scales!

Worht the wait for your Gr 8 Rachel...do the best you can!
the scales/technical work are really important and will stand you in good stead...even if they are a bit tedious right now!
Aurals can be horrendous...are you doing AB or Trinity exam? You can get a CD from the AB that is really good for either board...have a look at their website maybe...?
"Pictures from an Ex" is still one of my faves..and the Tchaik is heaven...enjoy it all...including the challenge!
Joyful x

Hello Joy.  Thanks, my Mum has ordered me a aural CD today.  I am doing my AB Grade 8 exam in March, thats the last time my tunes can be used in the exam.  I love playing, but hate the singing bits!  It's not fair, singers don't have to play the violin for their exam.

Yeah, aurals are a bit of a pain I have to admit...!
The CD is good tho...just keep listening to that CD over and over, it WILL go in!
Singers actually do have to do a lot too yknow...like worse aurals! (I know cos I am doing Gr 8 singing in the winter!!)
What are your peices? I forgot its about time for changeover...
good luck whatever!
Take care

Hello Joyful

I am going to play The Bag-pipe Player by Wieniawski, Concerto in G Rondeau Allegro and The President by Scott Skinner.  The President's one of the pieces I played in Fiddle Hell.  My CD has come in the post today, but I haven't had chance to listen to it yet because I had a piano and a flute lesson after school, and then I had to catch up on MSN...

Rachel, that's excellent! Just wondered if you had come across "The Mathematician" by Scott Skinner - it's a brill hornpipe and it's in the book "The Scottish Violinist".
